10 Things Malaysian Muslims Need to Know/Remember/Realize About Malaysian Christians.

January 21, 2013 Leave a comment Go to comments

Disclaimer:
Written below is my opinion, as a Christian, as a Malaysian. Its not the official view of any church body and not all Christians.Everyone is entitled to their own opinion.
…………………………………………………………………………………………….
And you need listen, listen, listen, to know and understand this, and just trust me on this.

1. We are not using the kalimah to convert Muslims to Christians. Of the THREE documented ‘conversions’ NONE were because of a Malay Bible. One was due to adoption, one read the English Bible (which he got himself) and the third was because of marriage.Contrast this to the tens of thousands of Christians converting to Islam in Malaysia and you will see, we are really the ones who should be worried.

2.Semenanjung Christians do not use the word because we PREFER it, we simply follow the word used in the Indonesian Bibles used by our Sabahan and Sarawakian brothers and sisters who attend service here in Semenanjung.Trust me, my priest struggles with Bahasa but does it just to accomodate them. Bahasa is the only language they really understand apart from their own native tongue. We’re not talking about the Bians and Bumburings and Ikings and Kitingans of the world here, we’re talking about students from the interior, manual workers and entry level staff. They are mostly Catholic and SIB (Sidang Injil Borneo), though many churches also have Sabahan and Sarawakians, and don’t forget the Indonesians, who have a large Christian population- Batak and Flores are technically almost entirely Christian.

For those asking, why not bring in a local Iban or Kadazan or Indonesian priest or localize the services…..they, like us are scattered. In Klang alone, there are four Catholic churches, many chapels, and more than thirty Protestant churches.Anyway, the law you are supporting, will affect them either way, whether they remain in Semananjung and East Malaysia.

3. By LAW , WE cannot give you ANY material regarding Christianity, be it a CD, or a Bible or an email. ALL Printed Material needs to be printed with ‘FOR CHRISTIANS ONLY’ Any attempt by a Muslim to obtain this is equally unlawful, as there are Syariah provisions against this.BY CONVENTION, Muslims do not attend Mass in Church. So HOW CAN something you CANNOT READ, CANNOT SEE, and CANNOT HEAR ever offend you? The idea that we would desecrate the kalimah equally illogical. Why would we insult God?

4. The usage of the word is not something new, it is something that predates Malaysia’s formation, the British Occupation. The Bible was originally Koine Greek, Hebrew and Aramaic. Hebrew is very similar to Arabic. The Bible was translated first to Latin, then to another 1223 languages, 471 of which is commonly used.  There are still efforts to translate another 1500 languages, mainly for academic purposes. Generally Christians believe the message of God is best delivered in the hearer’s own tongue. That is why Christian missionaries those days, spent years, learning the tongue, before translating the bible into it, then only preaching to them.It was the same with the Native Americans, Chinese,Japanese,South Americans, Africans. This is the opposite of how Islam was spread, which would be to teach the converts Arabic terms.

5.Malaysia is the only country in the world with this problem. Saudi Arabia, the world’s bedrock of Islam and Indonesia, the world’s largest Muslim country, doesn’t.

6.Hostility towards us is clearly politically motivated, we have been living amongst you for many, many years, we’ve shared and built schools, orphanages, hospitals, old folks homes for Malaysians of all ages. There is zero proof ZERO, of any attempt other than feeble pseudo-hard-to-believe gossips and murmurs. Has anyone brought forward any concrete proof of any conspiracy to convert Muslims?Had we wished to do so, don’t you think we could have used ALL we’ve built above for Malaysians to convert everyone who stepped into those hospitals, schools, clinics or orphanages?

How come this has never been an issue before? Have you thought about it? Check most Christian hospitals, orphanages, schools. Look for the plaque and see who officiated these buildings and you will find many of them opened by the Rulers. Check the plaque at YMCA Kuala Lumpur. See who was their first patron.

7. Lest you forget this bond of friendship, we are the only religion in Malaysia that is mentioned by name in Acts of Parliament apart from Islam. The large proportion Malaysian Christians are mostly from the Straits Settlements- they were already British Overseas Citizens. So the argument that we were poor, desperate and sought shelter here and have a hidden agenda to subvert the nation is not quite accurate. In fact its quite stupid.

8. Rights granted should not be revoked without good reason. We’re not asking for any new rights. In fact, many of our old rights were taken away- including restrictions on places of worship, removal of crosses from buildings we’ve built. But this one, this is a bit too raw a nerve to touch.Christians feel quite worried and insecure.

9. Malaysian Christians are not the only ones using the word. Malaysian(and global) Sikhs and Baha’is use it as well.As do some Hindus. ALL of the world’s main religions came from Asia, and all Abrahamaic religions from a very small part in Asia Minor, hence, the etymological similarity should not be entirely unexpected.

10. Malaysian Christians , like most Christians are engaging and peaceful people. So please, don’t bully us. Please don’t allow yourselves to be consumed by blind hate led on by blind politicians. Many will provoke and ask you this question ‘WHAT MORE DO THEY WANT?’ My answer would be, ‘We just wanna be left alone’.

Wonderful post you have here. Thoroughly enjoyed the whole article, and I do agree with all the points given. It’s just that I cannot shake away the feeling of 2 Timothy 3, where it says “But mark this, there will be terrible times in the last days. People will be lovers of themselves”, so irregardless of how much we ask them to ‘leave us alone’, I kind of doubt that they will. Either way, continue to stay strong for Christ. Keep up your posting!

Great piece. Even though I’m personally agnostic, I’m an advocate for the freedom for everyone to practice what they want and how they want. I despise what the rulers of this country are doing – using religion/religious arguments to drag mentality and society back to the 1800s. What I don’t understand is that most of the people who are spewing these comments/rules out were educated during an era of free thinking and liberalisation in Malaysia. They’re just now upbringing a generation of stupid and ignorant. I’m hoping that more people (who are on THAT side of the fence) read your piece and actually THINK… unfortunately, the people who will read this are the ones who probably already agree with you.
Any chance of getting someone to translate this into Bahasa (since the “word” isn’t used – clever) so that there can be a wider audience, as I know that a lot of the population (who need to read it) don’t actually read English very well (another issue).

the point is simple. Some Malays/Muslims are too frightened of Christianity, due to ignorance and political brainwashing, and so resort to make Christians their number one enemy.

Asking to be left alone won’t help. What the government should do is to ask these cheating and secretive Malays to show themselves up in a public forum and explain their policies and actions.

They normally secretly parade their bigotry and hatred to other muslims, some even forming a formal “Islamic” social organization. And of course approved by the government. The government dare not ban hatred organizations because they will lose votes. And so it is all political, yes.

This country should be cleansed of hatred and bigotry. No government can do that it seems, so we have to do it ourselves.

Its a highly charged political topic, as Malaysians (generally, of all races and religions) are an emotive crowd when it comes to what they hold sacred. This is more pronounced recently.

      • August 15, 2015 at 12:03 am

Indeed, until we all learn, especially those in positions of power and influence, that religion is a very personal thing, which one do not discus in public, at all. It is like discussing how we do sex in broad daylight. Something everyone likes to listen to but no one will agree and it will bring no gain whatsoever except to the perverts.

So lets keep things personal under the lid.

  4. January 30, 2013 at 6:23 pm

Good post 🙂 Shared it on FB as well with this comment: Sometimes I wonder if those who instigate all this fear about Christianity in this country know that Islam, Judaism and Christianity are known collectively as the Abrahamic faiths and that we are also collectively called The People of the Book? Any way you look at it, we can’t escape the fact that the 3 come from the same root and that we are but cousins…sometimes I feel maybe even siblings who seem to have forgotten our roots because of our capacity to stubbornly hang on to the past yet unwilling to remove the veil to allow us to see the present – the veil that as long as it’s there is going to make us continuously repeat this vicious cycle.

Thanks Shree. Yes,though when it comes to religion, sometimes people choose to cherry pick from scripture to justify their own innate ideas. Thus, the ideas reflected are their own, and not that of the Writer of the aforementioned scripture.

The problem is the authorities use arguments that are not sustainable. They assume the BM Bible is translated from English and only recently as if the Malay language is unique and came into existence only recently! (BTW the Anglican Church (Diocese of West Malaysia) was incorporated under an Act of Parliament.)

Thank you for reading. That, unfortunately is also the mainstream view of many an ignorant person. In regards to your point on the Anglican church, am aware of it (item 7). We also have AoPs on Christian schools, missions etc.

It is just sad to see that religion is now being used as a political “weapon” to gain votes. Islam has never encouraged Muslims to retaliate or hate non-believers.

  12. January 31, 2013 at 3:12 pm

Is the parable of ‘throwing pearls before swine’ the reason us Malaysian Christians would stop sharing our faith in God and Allah. Is it sufficient for us Malaysian Christians to justify ourselves before Christ as we turn our back from our calling to share our most precious? At times, I think, perhaps, Jesus would prefer us to share the grace and love, at the expense of continual effort to insist using the term ‘Allah’, in exchange for winning that one more soul. After all, didn’t God Himself merely addresses Himself as ‘I AM’ to Moses. if God is God is to every soul, ‘I AM’ would perhaps work just fine. Why do we insist in the use of Allah, when it is a term that distracted our cousins-in-God? Perhaps, so is the term God, when that name rings hollow. Or, perhaps, we are certain that we could rule out our rakan-rakan as God’s people also, as we think that ‘I AM’ is merely a personal God. Else, I think we should feel ashamed that we do not wish more of our Malay cousins could get to hear about the gospel.

One penumpang Kristian Cina looking keenly in the meaning of love thy neighbour, living in a world between Good Friday and Thanksgiving.

  13. January 31, 2013 at 3:20 pm

I think my previous post is a bit too wordy, and has poor grammar. In short, I just thought, perhaps, there is room to consider that collectively as Christians, we would want to be straightforward in spelling out our deepest calling of wanting to share our faith, because we do genuinely love our cousins-in-God, just as many Muslims would want us to understand more about their faith, and gentleness.

    • EJ
      January 31, 2013 at 3:39 pm

Hi Katasayang, Thanks for reading.I believe in love and peace as much as the next Christian and I understand where you’re coming from. Perhaps you’ve missed the point of the entire post- the ‘insistence’ is not so much a stubborn refusal to yield a word. It goes deeper than that.

Personally I don’t use the word in liturgy. But why should my Sabahan and Sarawakian brethren be denied the only name they know Yawyeh by ? And why now?

Should they be made to sacrifice their comfort and freedoms for ours ?

      More pertinently, what next?
      P/S: Nice article

Sdr Hasan, perkataan asal bagi ‘God’ adalah dalam bahasa Ibrani adalah ‘YWYH’ atau ‘Saya adalah’, iaitu singkatan kata-kata pertamaNya kepada Moses- ‘I am who I am’.

    • hasan
      February 1, 2013 at 1:59 am

      • January 4, 2014 at 6:21 pm

Semua orang cina and orang india in Malaysia menukar name mereka kepada bahasa melayu la. Katakan Jaguh Badminton Malaysia, “Lee Chong Wei”, kalau nama beliau tidak ditukarkan kepada bahasa melayu “Lee Chong Wei”, macam mana kamu boleh baca nama beliau dalam bahasa cina?

    Great, brother.

I’m a Malay and my educational background is in Islamic Studies & Jurisprudence. I’m very passionate in studying the authentic Muhammadan prophetic sayings & traditions as well as the quranic commentary.

Never I found a single word in the quran and its commentary or from prophet Muhammad’s sayings that prohibit or restrict non Muslims from using the word Allah, nor did they ask the Muslims to deny others from using it.

In fact it is every Muslim’s obligation to intro Allah to others. In the first chapter of the quran, Alfatihah or The Opener, Allah begins with: In the name of God, the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful. All praise and thanks is for God, [The] Creator, Owner, Sustainer of the Worlds.

If the word Allah is especially and exclusively for Muslims or Malays only, He Allah would have used The Creator of the Malays or Arabs in the opening chapter. Rather he used The Creator of the Worlds to state and declare that He created all.

Interestingly we will find in other chapters Allah encouraged Muslims to invite others to Allah and introduce Him to them. I wonder how on earth could the Muslims introduce Him to others if they (Non Muslims) are not allowed to even mention His Name.

I am grateful , brother Muhammad, that you took the time to visit this page and leave this comment. I too am studying law, and I have decided to add Fiqh and Syariah as additional subjects. Perhaps we could keep in touch and have a cup of coffee, I look forward to meeting more people with Islamic studies background, especially one who converses so eloquently in English (admittedly, my Bahasa is limited, disabling me from expressing my views correctly, it often comes out clumsy, crude and unintentionally disrespectful) 😛

hai muhammad, I think u misunderstanding the meaning of bismillahirrahmanirrahim .. it is not in the name of God, it should be in the name of Allah or full meaning “In the name of Allah , the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful ” thank you

Just use the word Tuhan lah. Why must we insist to use the word Allah?? Tuhan is a general noun for God. Just use Tuhan, and stop the bickering.

    • EJ
      February 5, 2013 at 12:09 pm

Tuhan is not the general noun for God, its a mistranslation that went uncorrected for centuries. Tuhan is an embellishment to the same cognate root word as Tuan. But to each his own.

  25. February 27, 2013 at 11:48 pm

Hello EJ, I stumbled upon your blog, this post in particular.

I’m a Malaysian Muslim and I have to say, I was quite unaware that this was still an issue! i did hear about it on TV in the past since I hadn’t heard anything regarding it since then I must have assumed it was somehow resolved. Out of sight, out of mind unfortunately.

I’m from an Islamic school and I completely agree with Muhammad. The word Allah (I assume that is the word you refer to?) has never been exclusive for Muslims. To my knowledge Arabs from many religions used it. That’s probably why it’s a non-issue in Saudi, as you said. Honestly, I think it’s pretty ridiculous, aren’t we referring to the same thing? God who created everything? (Unless you mean Jesus as God, which I don’t really understand tbh) But still linguistically, isn’t it the same as the word Lord being used in English translations of the Qur’an?

Also, about those conversions of Muslims into Christianity, I think that says more about us Malaysian Muslims than it does about Christians involved. If their grasp of the religion was solid, how can the mere use of the same word sway them out of Islam?

Anyway it’s a real pleasure to have found this blog and read your opinion. It’s quite rare that people openly discuss religion nowadays, and I’ve never had the chance to talk about religion with a Christian. Maybe you would be so kind as to let me ask you things?

Sorry if my comment is a bit lengthy 🙂

Hi Nadine- thanks for reading. Sure, I believe honest dialogue between honest people trying to understand God and by extension of this, themselves is far better a solution toward dialogue as opposed to the politically flavoured monologues we have these days 🙂 Feel free to look me up on FB or MSN , its easier to talk that way 😀

Sometimes I even wonder how the muslims from the govt departments got hold onto magazines and Christian publication books such as the Heralds when all publications were written clearly “for internal circulation only”.

I would appreciate your clarification. If we translate Hasan ( in BM) to English, it would still be Hasan. But I notice that in the Bible, John (English) is translated as Yahya (BM) or Yohanes (Indonesia) in the Alkitab. Is there a difference in translation methods?

I’ve never thought of reading a religion related article in calm =P, you sir are a good writer, i give u that, 1st of all, please bare with my poor english

This issue clearly came out politics, you studies law, and you know better i think, just to recap, when Ulamak from the green party make a statement, granted the term for Christians’ use, the Blue party mocked them, causing hatred and of course chaos for awhile, accused them for being insensetive, i got confused then, and i didn’t say word, after the green party pull back the statement, i got even more confused, but u know the whole stories

Anyway, i just realize tonight (damn my slow sense) that the decision were made based on like what brother muhammad and nadine appointed; the understanding of the whole situation

You addressed your concern and worries about conversion of christian to Muslim, well, it does to us Muslim too, we both worried if any one of us got converted, thats natural, can i say do i want to convert u? yes i would, and i think u would’ve done the same to me if u got a chance, thats natural, that makes us Muslims always beware about any issue raised by other religion, and this worried feeling that leads to extremist, hatred and a bit of paranoia and politics always win them

I agree with nadine there, if one don’t have a strong belief or faith, even without this particular term issue, he/she would slipped anyway

I realize that this feeling of caution won’t vanish just like that, not in million years, only thing i wish for is, i hope theres no violence involve — but u just can’t change everyones’ thought with yours, right?

“But I tell you that anyone who is angry with his brother will be subject to judgment. Again, anyone who says to his brother, ‘Raca, ‘ is answerable to the Sanhedrin. But anyone who says, ‘You fool!’ will be in danger of the fire of hell.” Mt 5:22 🙂 Thank you for reading.

This is a well written article. In. my opinion, we. are wasting our time discussing a topic where those. who raided and commenting the word. “Allah” used in Bible. Well, the word. is used. in Sikh holly book and Bahai hollybook. even in rigveda, has been used. All i can say is some narrow mind of some typical Malays need to be taught on World. History.

This is a great venue to air one’s feelings/ opinions/ thoughts on this complicated, sensitive and not to say, HOT issue in Malaysia right now.I am pleased to know that ,so far, what I have read here are eloquent and intelligent discussions. I read everything and I respect all opinions. It is very healthy for us to speak up, be listened to and not be afraid to voice what we really feel about this issue. There should not be any fear in airing one’s opinion as long as we stick to the point and be relevant and respectful. We don’t want to blow this up into something that could become hateful and violent. Kudos to the writer: you hold your own with your relevant replies to every comment and question. Peace, and may God bless everyone. We are all from the same God. Brother kamal – thanks for your comment.Don’t worry about your command of the English language. I think most of us who read this could pick up your point/ message. And no, personally I don’t think one person’s opinion is expected to change everyone’s opinion. We are blessed with the right to think. God gave us intelligent minds to question and think accordingly. However we have to learn how to disagree without being disagreeable. In this issue, most who care to write will either agree or agree to disagree . I love peace and I want to live in peace with my fellow human beings of whatever faith.

    Good Day Readers,

I am blessed that I came from a college that promotes studying of other religions, IIUM. And I do have a few bibles given by my Christian friends much to the dismay of some of my Muslim friends (haha please do not reveal my details as I most probably get caught having something which I am not supposed to – joking :)) The fear and lack of understanding leads to all this hocus pocus! Instead of accusations flying around, as discussion session, much like this one is preferred. Thank you for the lovely opinion shared – hope not to late for that:)

I don’t understand at all based on how “Malaysian” Muslim get angry because of Allah issue.. they should have know what does Allah really means. ==” Allah basically means God.. that’s all. Yet they raid and they refrain to use Allah. Does that mean Christian must not have God? Why they should be scared of? If they are really love their religion no matter what they will stay faithful to their religion. Don’t bring shame to your own religion. I like a sentence called “Don’t bother us at all”. I respect Muslim that respect me as a brother or a sister. I have a aunty who are Muslim that really love us (christian) without even try to convert us to Muslim. World peace with understanding not bringing other to understand you.

It really is a question of heart. Like you, I have many awesome Muslim family and friends too. “Al Ilah” would mean “The God” directly translated. The problem is most Muslims here have been conditioned with two misfacts 1)We do not use the word, its something new. 2)The Christians have been calling God “Tuhan” all this while. Both are wrong and we need to first address these two mis-facts before attempting to dialogue.

You sir, have wrote a very good and solid article. I’m a Malay Muslim myself, a Sabahan in fact, and is also torn apart due to this issue of banning the kalimah ‘Allah’ for the Bible. As I know, in Quran, it never stated that Allah belongs to only Muslims or Malays. He is the God of all and creator of all. To serve justice, i think it’s rather inappropriate to ban the Christians from using the word Allah. And i never heard of any cases that Muslims convert to Christians due to this issue. It’s quite absurd.

Terima kasih.

    For Hasan

kebanyakan perkataan daripada bahasa melayu dipinjam daripad bahasa arab. Because bible is translated to bahasa so we use “Allah” to represent One God in Bahasa Melayu. And for your information, i have seen an old bible in my house which have been translated to bahasa indonesia and there is “Allah” word there. It has been a long time we use the word, but why now? Muslims should not afraid of being converted if they really strong in their faith. When the judges said that Christian cannot use “Allah” because christian did not believe in One God so, do they really know about christianity? do they really learn about christian. how can they simply came to conclusion that the christians do not worship One God?. I come from Sabah. I have a lot of muslim relatives. they never questioned my faith and they never being converted. We respect each other and live as family… Most of us the christians being converted because of one main reason: MARRIAGE.

As an outsider, I totally agree with this post. I was actually surprised when this dispute came into picture awhile ago. Coming from a really diverse country – with Islam, Christian, Catholic, Buddhism and Hinduism as the five main religions – I still cannot understand what the big fuss is here in Malaysia. Then as an Indonesian Muslim living in Malaysia, I sometimes find myself dumbfounded with the way people use religion as an excuse for just about anything. I’m not saying that Indonesia doesn’t have conflicts, of course we do – just like any other country. But to have the word “Allah” being disputed to be exclusive only for the Muslims here in Malaysia very often than not makes me wonder what exactly went wrong. Not to mention how some claim that it is exclusive for “Malays”, which then puts me into the category of people that are not allowed to use any common Arabic phrases – because I’m not Malay.

It is rather sad to think that someone has to point these out for them. For us, these points are pretty much given and we’ve learned them pretty much since we were children. Ethnically, I am Batak, thus I am used to people from my ethnic background being either Christians or Muslim. And that there is no hidden agenda in the usage of “Allah” in the Bible. I believe the same goes to those people in Saudi Arabia or Egypt where Christians and Muslims live side by side.

Thank you for writing a solid article on this issue. It was a really good read.

    Great piece..and i stumbled upon it from a fellow Muslim’s re-tweet.
Some additions – getting in Indonesian pastors/priests legally into Malaysia? Our church never managed to get that done. Is that possible?
If Christian articles/bibles are “for non Muslims only” does JAKIM/JAIS have non Muslim employees who are to read these “offending” material in search of illegal words? Surely not.
And lastly..i see a silver lining in all this mess. The church comes together [hopefully for more noble/beatitude based causes than this] and at the same time, i believe more right thinking Muslims will be awakened to the twisted feeding the government has been feeding all of us.
    GB & Shalom!!

It saddens me that we Christians cannot practice our own religion. In fact, we are being “told” of what to do and “how” to pray. Old churches being bulldozed and churches now are old factory buildings. I remembered it wasn’t like this when I was in primary school or secondary school. When there’s a funeral, we all went. Even the Muslim friends went to the funeral service. Did we chase them out of church? No. In fact, we welcome them.

Why do they see us as a threat? We meant no harm. And most of them would not understand how we Christians feel. Most of them would just say “If the government doesn’t allow you to use the word Allah then don’t use lah!” We have been using the word Allah for a longgg longggg time already. Why banned it now?

Others would say we Christians are “disobedient” for not following the rules and regulations.Have they ever wondered that what if it is the other way around? How would they feel if they couldn’t practice their own religion in PEACE?

I just don’t understand why can’t we all practice our own religion freely. When I was in national service, my best friend is a Muslim. Before eating, we would remind each other to pray. She would say her doa while I would do mine. No argument whatsoever.

These whole religion thing is just making me mad. Why is the government focusing sooo much on religion instead of realll actual crimes like killing, raping and stealing?

Bro EJ, sorry if this is too much to ask.. Why don’t we as Christians just accept that the rulers already made it clear that we were banned from using that ‘A***h’ word. We do not have the right to judge wether they were right or wrong cause even Jesus did not judge people. So, my honest opinion would be, we just stop this fight of that word. Let they have what they want. I just want we as Christians seek for peace. In Jesus name, I’m sorry if my opinion were wrong. Thanks bro and God bless you always..

The first line of my post explains everyone has their own thoughts on this. Perhaps my dissatisfaction and disappointment stems from years of watching Christians here and elsewhere get bullied into submission. Why us? What did we do? And if we leave this be, what will they come for next? Extremism has no bounds- hence the term, extremism.

We are not asked to judge, but to admonish with gentleness and with righteousness (Jn 7:24, Mt 7:2-5, 2Tim 4:2)

    Hi EJ,

What a wonderful piece of article you have written here and I do enjoy reading it. I hope your writeup will change current people’s perception and reduce their hostility towards Christianity. In fact, though I am not religious, not even a believer, I believe that all religions should be viewed as equal and nothing is above one another. Furthermore, at the end of the day, all religions are actually standing on the same platform – peace, harmony and discipline.

I wonder how they feel if English Christian majority nations raid and confiscate their English translated Hadith. I am sure there are a few sentences that uses ‘God’ and ‘Lord’ in there… They are, after all..not found in the Quran.

  63. January 3, 2014 at 7:18 pm

Well-written. Unfortunately, I don’t think those who are making all that noise out there are interested in reading or understanding. This has nothing to do with religion, not Islam, not Christianity, or terms for the Deity in whichever Semitic language. We’re looking at a group of people within the Malay community who are compensating for their insecurities by behaving in a thuggish manner – it’s like your archetypal school bully. They pick on the use of “Allah” now as an excuse to bully. They can pick on something else next, and slowly and surely chip away at everything that holds civil society together. Now what do we do with school bullies?

  64. January 3, 2014 at 7:33 pm

I would say your article is great and pretty much explains about this issue. I am a Muslim. To Christians who may do not know. We Muslims do believe the existance of Jesus Christ, The Holy Quran mentions like the canonical gospels, the story of Jesus although not much detail. We believe the virgin birth of Mary, the miracles that are not mentioned in the 4 gospels like talking shortly after birth (available also in the Infancy Gospel of Thomas), Raising the dead. And He also have Deciples (although not named). The only fundamental thing that seperates Muslims and Christians is we do not believe that Jesus was cruxified (He was substituted by either Judas Iscariot or Simon of Cyrene), He not the forsaken Son of God. He never been dead and resurrected. But he do ascend to the heaven to prepare for His second coming to defeat the antichrist or Masih alDajal (false christ). I am sorry if my comment will offend either Muslims and Christians.

As an American, I find this whole situation disturbing. The Framers of our US Constitution apparently knew what they were doing with the First Amendment which prohibits the government from establishing religion or preventing its citizens from worshipping however they see fit.

Unfortunately I still do not have to look very far beyond my own backyard to see Americans – especially our elected officials – using religion as a political tool as well. Many people who purport to be Christian certainly don’t act like Christians. I do not know if you are aware of the American ultra-conservative radio “personality” Rush Limbaugh but Pope Francis drives him to distraction…which IMO means the Pope is doing something right 🙂

It would be a better world if we could all just get along.

    Thank you for your perspective.

    Hi EJ,

This is indeed a raw, matter-of-fact article. I am putting my fingers crossed that more people will stumble across this article and try to change the reality that is happening in Malaysia. At the end of the day everything boils down to the people who run our country. I wish they would be more Muslims, especially high-rank officials in the government, stepping up for us. This is way off the line.

Just heard a good 5 mins of Quran preaching on the radio. And they say Christians want to convert others..

I honestly got no issue with that but hey, apa lagi diorang mau?

  68. January 4, 2014 at 12:21 am

I want to share my opinion, first I give a verse in the holy Quran, Surah Ta-ha 20:14 “Indeed, I am Allah. There is no ilah (god) except Me, so worship Me and establish prayer for My remembrance”. Allah which stated in the holy Quran is only one, and the one that Muslim people worship today and ilah means god. If in bible use Allah for referring to christian god, its mean our God is the same. The way of Muslim and Christian live also should be same and based on scripture that has a same guide of life. I’m not found in holy Quran said that Allah is exclusive for Malay, but it is indeed exclusive for whoever believe in Allah which that stated in the holy Quran. In some studies recorded that the word Allah has been known before the birth of Prophet Muhammad s.a.w and been used in the Prophet Isa a.s scripture (bible). In our (Muslim) believes, the god Nabi Isa a.s worshipped was the same god as Muslim worship today. The word of Allah is should be use by the people who believes and worship the same god as stated in holy Quran. But clearly now, Islam and Christian has the different god. In Arabic the word Allah does mean god. But I cannot agree or disagree the real meaning of Allah is god or not, to discover that I need to go way back thousand of years ago during the time of first people use the word Allah. This case may be same as the name of Nabi Yahya a.s was translated to John, John is an English name but John was not an Englishman. Maybe there was a mistranslation of the word Allah, who knows. The use of word Allah in bible may not directly can convert muslim to christian, as a malaysian muslim it concern me if the muslim are confuse with this matter. Lets say a muslim found from his friends that the christian refer their god as Allah and then think that Islam and christian are the same because using the same call of god. Just Islam is more strict but he want a simple life. He may want to convert to christian. In Islam the punihsment to whoever muslim convert to other religion (murtad) is death, this mean converting to other religions is not a small problem thats why many people angry with this. They dont want their kids, friends or someone close to them lost faith. Not all muslim are religious and have good knowledge in Islam.

This is just my opinion as a malaysian muslim based on my knowledge and thought only not driven by someone. If you think my opinion is ridiculous, im sorry for that, maybe my knowledge is not enough to give an opinion.

I understand where you are coming from brother. Please understand where I am coming from. We’re not trying to convert Muslims. Assuming we are wrong, and we are hellbound and we are ‘sesat’…let God judge us la 🙂

      • January 4, 2014 at 6:07 am

Sir ej, after consulted with my friend. It seems that my opinion is wrong. Im very sorry made an opinion before making a deep research. Maybe I got too emotional about this matter. There was a story during in the time of Prophet Muhammad s.a.w, he (Muhammad) permitted the pagan to use the word Allah to refer to their god. This shows that Islam not forbid others to use the word Allah for that purpose. Again I apologise for gave a contrary opinion. May we live in harmony. This article has driven me to a real truth. Thank you.

    Hi,

Personally, if Malaysian Christian want to use Kalimah Allah i don’t mind if all christian follow Hudud, because i saw what some word of “Hudud” wrote in Bible. This is the word:

    Matthew Chapter 5 (30):

“And if your right hand serves as a trap to ensnare you or is an occasion for you to stumble and sin, cut it off and cast it from you. It is better that you lose one of your members than that your entire body should be cast into hell (Gehenna)”.
All muslim must circumcised, mean we trust and believe what Allah ask to do and we truly believe what in our Quran.

    In Malay:

    Matius Bab 4 Ayat 30:

“Kalau tangan kananmu menyebabkan engkau berdosa, potong dan buanglah tangan itu! Lebih baik kehilangan sebelah tanganmu daripada seluruh badanmu masuk ke neraka.”

If kalimah Allah was not issue for Muslim, it not issue for christian to follow hudud right? Because in your bible state that Hudud (potong tangan).

      January 4, 2014 at 9:32 am

Hudud is not ‘potong tangan’.’Hudud’ or ‘Hadd’ refers to capital punishment involving stoning (al-rajm) and yes, a very small part of it is dismemberment.

Personally, I support Hudud be implemented, but that’s just my personal view.

And your position just demonstrates you didn’t catch what I was trying to say, sir 🙂

I am not a Malaysian so I may not have much right to speak on this matter, it is purely political and has very little to do with Islam as you have rightly pointed out on point 6.

The word issue is so limited to Malaysia that there is not a single other nation (57 Muslim majority countries out there) or Muslim society (Those living in other countries/Historic Muslim societies eg Spain) that it is really completely absurd and I have nothing to refer to with regards to this specific matter but next time you as Christian (“A people of the book” for us Muslims) is not treated right remind the Muslims about Prophet’s letter to Christians.

10 is too much and not necessary. The 1 thing Malaysians need to know is that every time we spill the bean on PM’s and/or any of their family member’s wrong doing (like “Wasatiyyah” deception) the cabals will pick and deploy counter measure (such as religion/race) from the archive to deflect the attention. Stay focus, they are on a looting spree and robbing from us from our ignorance.

In my 50 years as far as I can recall, there is only one Quran, the Al-Quran (Holy Quran). I don’t know which other Quran that people like Noh Omar, Ibrahim Ali and the rest of the UMNO goons refer to; because I failed to detect any part of it that procures what these tyrants are putting out on papers so often.

What I can see is they are harping on some trivial technical issues only to deflect the grave attention on PM and his family’s so called ‘Wasatiyyah’ lifestyle.

Its not right, and we Malaysians know better. Many things are filtered out from UMNO’s version of Islam (whatever it may be). They have plenty of issues under their hat ready to execute when they are cornered. By now we are very familiar their favorite and most effective “False Flag” issues are either “Islam” and “Malay rights” or both – that’s all they know. They and their handpicked demagogue religious leaders aka “Enlightened Beings” (Majlis Fatwa, JAIS, JAWI, JAWA, etc.) will not tell you that Islam requires Muslims to respect the faith of others.

Our corrupted government, UMNO and their Enlightened Beings will not tell you that Muslim does not take the name of Jesus, without saying Eesa (Nabi Isa) Alai-hiss-Salaam i.e. (Jesus peace be upon him). They will not disclose the fact that Jesus is mentioned by name twenty-five times in the Holy Quran (QS 2:87, 3:45, 4:171, 5:46, 6:85, to quote a few).

They will flip, twist, spin, somersault and modify every hadith there is if it can be used as their jumping stone for political mileage. They setup and grant the use Masjid and Surau all over Malaysia – as many as possible as long as they comply with their Enlightened Beings script for Friday “Khutbah”. They use hadith to instill fear and will not use them on the positive/constructive posture to enlighten and progress their “Umrah”, so that they can continue to keep us dumb (Likewise with the reverting of Science and Math to Bahasa, so they Malaysians can’t go abroad and prosper).

Extracted from Islamic City.Com, “Prophet Muhammad was always very respectful towards the Christians. They (UMPORNO) will not tell you that according to Islamic historians, Ibn e Saad and Ibn e Hisham; once there was a delegation of Byzantine Christians, who were traveling from Yemen to Madinah. The delegation was led by a bishop by the name of Zqyd al-Usquf, who came to discuss a number of issues with Prophet Muhammad. When the time of their prayer came, they asked the Prophet if they could do their worship in the mosque of the Prophet. He answered, “Conduct your service here in the mosque. It is a place dedicated to God.”

We should never ridicule the religious beliefs of others, no matter how much we disagree with them.

      God says in the Quran:

“And insult not those whom they worship besides God, lest they insult God wrongfully without knowledge. Thus We have made fair-seeming to each people its own doings; then to their Lord is their return and He shall then inform them of all that they used to do” (QS 6:108).

To our fellow Malaysians, don’t for one second subscribe to the opinion of these cabals, they do not represent the Muslims or Islam. They are using is as an excuse to launch their agenda to stay in power and loot from our hardwork. Dont event comment on their claims that only fuels their agenda.

    EJ,

As a fellow Malaysian, thank you for sharing us your thoughts, which I hope do represent a large proportion what other Christians holds in Malaysia. I do believe that many of us M’sians of whatever religion or race, just want peace in their lives and to carry on living happily without all these drama. As a Malaysian Muslim myself, please mark my word, we want the same thing too.

However, I want to share with you what I think the majority of Malaysian Muslims, particularly those who do not necessarily agree with your viewpoint, feel in regard to this issue.

First of all, whilst we acknowledge that there are well-meaning Christians like you who respect the law and constitution, particularly on Islam as the Federal religion, one cannot help but realise that the usage of Allah in the Malay bible, as opposed to ‘Tuhan’, can be used as a very effective preaching tool for Malay Muslims, particularly who are currently 1) weak in their Islamic faith and understanding (who we are admittedly trying to bring them back closer to Allah) and 2. Conversant mostly in Bahasa Melayu. To deny this completely is somewhat naive by anybody with intelligence and understanding of what’s going on in Malaysia and the rest of the world. Your no.4 statement also supports this, which is what we already know as ‘contextualisation’, and somewhat contradicts your no.1 argument.

On one hand there are efforts from various groups to bring back Muslims to really know who Allah is, and on the other hand, we are also using the law to protect this and maintain Islam as the religion of Malays. Having said that, we also acknowledge the increasing number of Muslims who do understand their faith and can discern between Islam and Christianity, but to be generalising (i.e. ‘pukul sama rata’) the whole population does not truly reflect the true situation.

To those who are saying ‘it is just a word, chill out Muslims’, please understand that it is not merely just a word. It represents aqeedah, the belief of oneness of God, which really is the basis, and I truly mean this, the basis and essence of what Islam is about. We say the word at least almost 300 times a day in our 5 obligatory prayers, not including the extra prayers and recitations and the normal everyday ‘inshaAllah’, ‘alhamdulillah’, ‘masyaAllah’ we say everyday. Coming from that perspective, then, will you understand why this subject is a very sensitive one? And also makes me wonder why some Christians (e.g. priest Andrew) are really adamant to pursue this issue further as if our sensitivity as Muslims are not at all being taken into consideration?

      Thank you for reading, Saudara/i.

The problem for us, as explained, the gradual erosion of rights. This is being seen beyond and above the scope of etymology but into something much larger than that.

        January 10, 2014 at 1:26 pm

Thanks EJ. You’ve mentioned erosion of rights..could you perhaps clarify on that? Rights to what?

If you’re talking about rights and freedom to practicing your faith, then I am as a Muslim must 100% respect that as that is obliged upon me. I have yet seen anybody being restricted to practice their own faith and do what they want to do so long it’s not jeapordising other people in any way. The largest church is SE Asia, the Calvary Convention centre has also been built recently in Bukit Jalil- so I’m not sure what you mean by restriction of places to worship, given the Christian population in M’sia is about 9%?

If you’re talking about the rights to propagate, by having Islam as the federal religion in M’sia, you must understand why the authority has put restrictions of other faiths, including Christianity, onto Muslims as a means of protection. (This, of course, works as only one of the many means – like I said, education towards the real understanding of Islam is perhaps just as, if not, more crucial.) Therefore, yes the right to propagate faiths other than Islam to Muslims is restricted due to the reason above.

Already I’ve heard some Christian Sabahans saying that they respect and acknowledge that Islam as the federal constitution, and are willing to replace the word in order to bring back peace since this is bringing so much chaos to the country. I’m not sure though if Christians in West Msia can perhaps accept this? There are other ways to let the government know you’re unhappy, but to be impinging on a massive part of Islam and muslims in this country, is clearly creating more unnecessary havoc and division in this already troubled country.

I think you are sorely mistaken on the Sabahan Christian part, but yes I agree with your other points.
As to erosion of rights, please do see my earlier post on this 🙂

Thanks so much for reading and commenting, hope more people dialogue 🙂

Just came across your splendid article. The last commandment is”Love one another as I love you” extremely difficult to follow. We creatures of God have forgotten…although not entirely…to respect one another only then we can live in peace. After all we are the creation of the Almighty.
